With St Kilda Film Festival underway, we thought it would be a good idea to look into the top five films every business owner should see.

Since looking into these films, it became known that they each have a similar theme, try and see if you can figure it out.

 Joy Movie Poster
Joy (2015)

A film about Joy Mangano, a female entrepreneur, whose journey to success is one we can all learn from. The 2015 Oscar nominated film follows Joy’s desire and determination to succeed when everyone around her expects her to fail. The movie explores Joy’s transition from selling mops in a supermarket (illegally) to working the camera and being on live television, and she does all this, like many entrepreneurs, while keeping her family together. Joy comes across many road blocks throughout her career and Jennifer Lawrence portrays these struggles with as much angst as the real life Joy would have felt. This movie will leave you feeling empowered to keep going and persevere even when you feel like giving up.

The Social Network
The Social Network (2010)

This Oscar worthy film follows the creation of Facebook. We are all on Facebook and use other Facebook owned apps which is why Mark Zuckerberg is one of the world’s most successful billionaires. If you haven’t seen this film yet, please take the time to do so and watch this introvert create a world online in his Harvard dorm-room. Mark Zuckerberg, played by Jesse Eisenberg, took a small idea and turned it into one of the most well known and profitable businesses. The film shows how he did it and the turbulence that erupted with his co-founders. Not only will you learn from this film, you will be engrossed the entire time with the storytelling and acting from a great ensemble.

Erin Brockervich
Erin Brockovich (2000)

Julia Roberts is nothing but amazing in this role, which is why she won the Oscar for Best Lead Actress. Erin Brockovich had a never say never attitude and is an inspiration to any entrepreneur. This film, released 19 years ago is still relevant today. With the witty dialogue and fiery attitude of Brockovich the film is extremely entertaining and a bit of a tear jerker. Today, the real life Erin Brockovich is still practicing law and this film shows that there’s always a way to fight back.

The Wolf of Wall Street
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Leonardo Di Caprio,Matthew McConaughey, lavish parties and alcohol infused craziness, what’s not to love? This movie is the epitome of wild, a great movie about Jordan Belfort who was known as the Wolf of Wall Street. The movie explores how Belfort made his entire fortune, predominantly by defrauding wealthy investors out of millions along with his trusted sidekick (Jonah Hill). This film is much more than a story about Wall Street, it showcases the hidden world of sex and drugs during the 90s.

The Founder Poster
The Founder (2016)

This is a film about the man behind the origins of Mcdonald’s. Ray Kroc, played by the great Michael Keaton, turned the single-outlet burger joint into the global success that McDonald’s now is. The movie follows the sneaky undermining of the Mcdonald brothers and telling the story as if he was the ‘founder’ of the company. When McDonald’s celebrated its Founder’s Day they honoured Ray Kroc when in fact this wasn’t the true story. This is a great film if you are interested in how conniving businessmen work, no wonder this film was nominated for Academy Awards.
